Setting Notes

Gods

Entities from beyond everyday reality (“spirits”) abound. Shamans make deals with lesser spirits local to a place. Folk magic also interacts with these lesser spirits, but in an indirect fashion. Spirits with enough power and wide enough presence to be accessible everywhere are called “gods” or “demons”. Sorcerors deal primarily with demons and theists with gods, but there’s not a clear dividing line between the two and it’s possible to create pacts allowing interaction with these greater spirits via either mode.

Folk magic coerces lesser spirits which lack the power to resist the force of human will. Animism/sorcery/theism are based on pacts with spirits solid enough to have a personality and will of their own. Mysticism coerces the same grade of spirits as folk magic, but draws them into your body rather than commanding them externally.
